Understanding Executive Functions, Dysfunctions and Neurodiversity when Teaching Music to Students
Session Description
This presentation supports instructors in developing a deeper understanding of executive functioning skills and student neurodiversity, as well as an overview of social-emotional development and how a student’s individual differences may present in music classrooms and instructional settings. The session will provide practical strategies and tools instructors can use to support students with neurodiverse needs in positive, effective ways. Participants will also build skills in positive behavior support and instructional planning, with an emphasis on meeting students where they are. Overall, the presentation aims to increase instructor confidence in creating inclusive, supportive learning environments that promote meaningful engagement and success for all students.

- Analyze the relationship between developmental capacities and executive functioning to accurately assess a student’s cognitive readiness for specific musical tasks.
- Identify specific behavioral and cognitive manifestations of neurodiversity as they present within both one-on-one and small group instructional settings.
