Deepening Understanding: Designing Assessments for Meaningful Evidence

Course Description

This training focuses on strengthening the design and use of assessments to capture meaningful evidence of student thinking. Participants will explore how assessment tasks can be intentionally structured to move beyond recall and surface deeper understanding, reasoning, and transfer. The session highlights the importance of cognitive demand and examines how different question types and task designs can reveal what students know, how they think, and where misconceptions persist. Educators will also consider how as content and construct validity directly impacts the accuracy of instructional decisions. Emphasis is placed using assessment data to inform teaching in real time while ensuring that summative judgments remain credible and reliable. Throughout the training, participants will reflect on how assessment can be used to maintain high expectations, promote challenge, and support progression for all learners.

  1. Differentiate among different levels of cognitive demand required at each level of Blooms Taxonomy and/or Depth of Knowledge
     
  2. Explore the use of open-ended and two-tier multiple-choice questions to strengthen the measurement of higher-order thinking skills
     
  3. Examine content and construct validity in student assessments
    Explore strategies to confirm stretch and challenge within the teaching and learning process
