Approaches to Learning; skill development in the MYP

Session Dates

Course Description

This interactive workshop is designed to deepen educators’ understanding and practical implementation of Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills within the Middle Years Programme. ATL skills are central to helping students become self-regulated, resilient, and lifelong learners. Participants will explore how to purposefully embed ATL skill development—thinking, communication, research, social, and self-management—into unit planning, teaching practices, and assessment.

Through collaborative tasks, case studies, and reflective exercises, participants will connect ATL skill instruction to the MYP framework, including its conceptual, inquiry-based, and interdisciplinary components. The session will also examine strategies to assess ATL skill development and track student growth in meaningful and consistent ways.

Learning Outcome

  1. Identify and understand the five ATL skill categories and their role in supporting holistic student development in the MYP

  2. Integrate ATL skills into unit planning, instructional strategies, and formative/summative assessments

  3. Analyze examples of ATL integration across subject groups in real classroom settings
  4. Develop strategies and tools to monitor and assess student growth in ATL skills

Target Audience

MYP subject teachers, coordinators, and instructional leaders across disciplines, as well as IB curriculum developers, educational coaches, and mentors supporting MYP implementation
