Supporting Multilingual Learners in the Classroom

Course Description

Every teacher is a language teacher! Deepen your capacity to deliver instruction that accommodates our students’ language needs and increases opportunities for them to access the curriculum. This asynchronous professional development module is designed to empower educators with the essential knowledge, research-based practices, and practical strategies needed to effectively support Multilingual Learners (MLs). As the educational landscape continues to evolve, teachers must hone their skills in fostering an inclusive learning environment that addresses the unique needs of multilingual learners.

This course is part of the Foundations of Inclusive Teaching (FIT) suite designed to effectively benefit all educators looking to champion effective inclusion on their campuses.

Learning Outcome

 

  1. Explore current research and literature on language acquisition and learning theories for multilingual learners.

  2. Reflect on the diverse linguistic backgrounds and cultural contexts that influence the educational experiences of multilingual learners.

  3. Examine evidence-based instructional strategies and interventions that enhance language development and academic success for multilingual learners.

Target Audience

All IB teachers across subject areas especially those teaching content in languages not native to the learners, plus Inclusion and learning support teams working to create accessible, equitable classroom environments
