Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy

Session Dates

Course Description

Culturally sustaining pedagogy extends beyond cultural responsiveness by actively affirming and nurturing students’ diverse cultural identities within the learning environment. This workshop explores how educators can create inclusive classrooms that honor students’ languages, histories, and traditions while fostering critical engagement and academic rigor. Participants will examine research-based approaches to sustain cultural pluralism, challenge deficit narratives, and design curricula that empower all learners. Through reflective dialogue and practical strategies, this session supports educators in cultivating equitable and dynamic learning communities.

Learning Outcome

  1. Explain the principles of culturally sustaining pedagogy** and its significance in diverse classrooms.
  2. Critique traditional teaching practices** that may marginalize cultural identities and propose inclusive alternatives.

  3.  Design learning experiences that integrate students’ cultural backgrounds and promote critical consciousness.
  4. Evaluate classroom materials and assessments** for cultural relevance and inclusivity.

Target Audience

K–12 educators, curriculum coordinators, instructional leaders, and school administrators who are committed to creating inclusive, equitable, and culturally affirming learning environments. This session is especially relevant for those working in multilingual, multicultural, or international school settings—including IB and national systems—who seek to embed students’ identities, languages, and experiences meaningfully into the curriculum and school culture.
