Course Description

This workshop is designed for new educators in authorized IB Schools and/ or educators new to the requirements or supervision of the extended essay who wish to gain an understanding of the special nature and specific requirements of the extended essay, its role in the Diploma Programme and how they can support students in the extended essay process in a manner that aligns with the IB mission statement and philosophy.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

 
  1. Develop knowledge of the IB mission, philosophy, and DP programme model, positioning the Extended Essay (EE) within a holistic learning framework.
  2. Understand the purpose, requirements, research pathways (subject-specific and interdisciplinary), and the EE as a complementary component of the DP core.
  3. Explore the central role of the IB learner profile, Approaches to Teaching (ATT), and Approaches to Learning (ATL) in guiding the EE process.
  4. Clarify the roles and responsibilities of supervisors and stakeholders, and examine the policies and administrative structures needed to effectively support students.
  5. Support students in building research and academic writing skills, fostering reflection, ethical practice, independence, and enjoyment throughout the EE journey.
  6. Apply assessment criteria using exemplars of student work, and engage with IB support materials and programme resources to strengthen guidance and feedback.
